Building upon the fundamentals of mechanical design taught in MEAM 101, this hands-on, project-based course provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to design, analyze, manufacture, and test fully-functional mechanical systems. Topics covered include an introduction to machine elements, analysis of the mechanics of machining, manufacturing technology, precision fabrication (milling, turning, and computer-controlled machining), metrology, tolerances, cutting-tool fundamentals, and engineering materials.

Engine
The fabrication of your engine will be broken down into three distinct categories.
1. Provided parts - These parts will be provided to you. The zip file below contains SolidWorks files for these parts, including the piston cylinder, flanged air chamber, displacer assembly, displacer shaft, and the return shaft:
2. Fully Defined - These are parts that you will manufacture in accordance with the provided engineering drawing:
02 Piston Flange
03 Piston
04 Web
05 Crankshaft Bearing Tube
06 Displacer Rod Fork
07 Displacer Bushing Tube
08 Heat Sink
3. Open Design - Given minimal engineering specifications and knowledge of your engine, you will design and fabricate the following:
10 Piston Connecting Rod
11 Displacer Connecting Rod
12 Return Crank
13 Balance Weight
14 Output Shaft & Flywheel
15 Base/Stand
Wall of Champions
At the conclusion of the project, we test each student's engine using a small butane table torch. The fastest engines from each semester are listed below:
