MEAM.Design - SAAST - A1: Laser-Cut Tokens

To be completed by the start of activities on Tuesday, July 10th, this task will help you gain familiarity with SolidWorks, DWGeditor, and the laser cutter as you create a personalized token.

Supplies

You will receive a small 3"x3" square of 1/8" thick PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate, commonly known as Acrylic or Plexiglass, see Wikipedia for more information about this very useful plastic).

Exterior Definition

Below you will find an engineering drawing of the tokens that you must create. Create a new part in SolidWorks and match the dimensions of the drawing below, make sure you get it correct or your puzzle piece won't fit with the others!!

After you have created the part file and defined the exterior shape, you will need to customize the interior of your token.

Interior Definition

You will need to design the interior of your token on your own. Your name must be etched somewhere. Be creative!

When you are ready to export your file make sure:

You are using inches

You export as a DWG

If using fonts, select TrueType under the fonts pulldown in the options menu when you save the DWG

Have Fun!

Using the Laser Cutter

A TA must be present whenever you use the laser cutter.

Bonus Opportunity

If you would like an extra challenge, find a way to use some of the scrap material in the laser cutter room to add contrasting colors or a third dimension to your token!
