MEAM.Design - MEAM 101 - DERBY

Objective

  • Working as a pair with another student, design and build a gravity-powered vehicle to travel down a slotted track.
  • NOTE: Making your way down the track as quickly as possible can be a powerful incentive, though your marks on the project will not be tied to your vehicle's time. You can choose to design for speed, appearance, or something else!

Constraints

  • Your vehicle must fit on the track. Note: This track model can fit two vehicles at a time and functions similarly to the photo at the top of this page. The actual track is available in Towne 205 for testing.
  • You can use up to two alloy steel dowel pins of either 1-1/2" length or 2" length.
  • You can use up to four bronze sleeve bearings.
  • You will have open access to the MakerFleet and the laser cutters.
  • You can use any acrylic or MDF sheet stock that you can find.
  • To fit on the track, your vehicle must have a minimum ground clearance of 0.125" and have a maximum width of 2.5".
  • You have a printing time limit of FOUR hours and your infill may not be higher than 20%

Steps & Deliverables

  • Design Reviews (9/29 & 10/13) - Be prepared to discuss and show your design to your TA during studio.

  • Track Day (10/19) - Bring your completed DERBY to lecture, and we'll see how well it makes it down the track.

  • Final Model (10/19) - Submit a Pack-and-Go zip folder of your completed design to the Canvas assignment (only one submission per pair is necessary).
