MEAM 101: Introduction to Mechanical Design
Professor Jonathan Fiene
03/23/10
- Team Awesome is assembled. We decided to postpone brainstorming until after the enclose project is due.

03/30/10
- We brainstormed ideas in lab today. Ideas that arose from brainstorming include:
1. 3-d connect four
2. Mini billiards.
3. Awesome war game.
2. Mini billiards.
3. Awesome war game.
- After discussion, we decided to work on the war game, which will combine soldiers, projectile artillery, and fortifications. We pitched the idea to Professor Fiene and TA-in-chief Jason. We received enthusiasm and also picked up some great tips and advice to improve the game. For example, we though about implementing one of the mechanics from Stratego (where a king appears as a soldier but has a uniquely colored base, which is inconspicuous to the enemy)
Thereafter, we devised a rough outline of the game's mechanics:
MECHANICS 1.0
- Before a game begins, each player has pieces of terrain he can arrange on his half the board.
- Each players has a few soldiers (exact number to be decided) and one king.
- Each team has 1 projectile weapon.
- Each turn, the number of moves a players' soldiers can moved is determined by die/dice roll. Each player can fire his weapon once each turn. If an enemy soldier, terrain piece or cannon is hit, the piece is removed from the game.
04/01/10
- We brought in the expertise of Andrew Guenin in MEAM 150 to help us out. We talked about what kind of projectile weapon we want to make- cannon, catapult, or crossbow, and decide to have cannons.
- While Albert and Andy put more detail in game mechanics, Joe and Ellen began to design (with parametrization!) the cannon in SolidWorks.

- New/Additional Game & Design Components:
1. Board will have slots and pieces will have pegs.
2. We decided to change theme a bit. The concept is now "Save Your Princess".
3. Terrain will be fortifications instead.

3. Terrain will be fortifications instead.
- Background: Two kingdoms have captured the other kingdom's princess. It is your soldiers' job to reach your princess (there is no longer a king piece).
- MECHANICS 2.0
1. Before a game begins, each player has pieces of fortification he can arrange on his half the board.
2. Each player has a few soldiers (exact number to be decided) and one princess, all of which he sets up across his side of the board before the game.
3. Each team has 1 projectile weapon.
4. Each turn, the number of moves a players' soldiers can moved is determined by die/dice roll. Each player can fire his weapon once each turn. If an enemy soldier, terrain piece or cannon is hit, the piece is removed from the game. A hit on a bounce still counts as a kill.
5. If you kill the princess your team is trying to rescue, you lose. Still deploy terrain first, then cannon, then the princess you're holding hostage, then soldiers.
6. Solders "face off" when they are on adjacent squares.

- Possible idea: we might still have a king, or general, disguised as a soldier. As a twist, when the king gets killed, he automatically kills the soldier that slew him (if he is killed by a cannon, the cannon is unaffected).
04/06/10
- We worked on logistics:
1. Amounts of materials needed for each piece
2. Dimensions of pieces and board
3. Placement of peg on the squares of board
2. Dimensions of pieces and board
3. Placement of peg on the squares of board
- We then delegated tasks:
Al - coordinate with Andy, design soldiers in SolidWorks.
Ellen- design cannon
Joe- design board
- For materials and dimensions see image below.
- MECHANICS 3.0
- Save the Princess
- Two kingdoms have captured the other kingdom's princess. It is your soldiers' job to reach your princess.
- Set-Up: The board has will have slots where soldiers, princesses and fortifications are pegged in.
- PREGAME:
1. Arrange your fortifications on your half of the field.
2. Your cannon is off the board.
3. Position the Princess you are holding hostage in a slot. The princess cannot move.
4. Arrange your soldiers in slots on your half.
2. Your cannon is off the board.
3. Position the Princess you are holding hostage in a slot. The princess cannot move.
4. Arrange your soldiers in slots on your half.
- GamePlay
1. Roll a die to determine who goes first.
2. Each turn, roll 2 dice for your movement number. Divide this however you wish among your soldiers. Soldiers can move forward, backward and side-to-side, but they cannot move diagonally across board slots. Solders cannot climb walls. Each turn, you can also fire your cannon once. You can move your cannon as you wish (as long as it is off and behind the board). You can choose the order in which you move your soldier, attack an enemy soldier and fire your cannon.
3. Battle:

3. Battle:
-> CANNONS - If a cannon ball hits a wall, the wall is removed. If it hits a soldier, the soldier is killed. If you hit your own princess, you lose. Hits made on a bounce do not count.
-> SOLDIERS - When opposing soldiers land on adjacent squares (non-diagonal), they fight. The offensive soldier (the one who approached) rolls two dice, the defender rolls one. If either of the attacker's numbers are higher, the defending soldier is destroyed. If the defender's number is higher than or equal to the attacker's highest number, the attacker dies.
-> COMMANDER - Each team has a 'Commander' who looks, fights, and moves like a regular soldier, but has a different colored base. When an opposing soldier kills the Commander, he also kills that soldier.
4. Announce when your turn is over
5. You win when one of your soldiers reaches the princess your opponent is holding hostage. If all your soldiers are destroyed, you lose.

Materials and Dimensions

4/8/2010
- Ellen sent in order for these materials and emailed Fiene asking about stock aluminum.
1/4" thick, 10"x10" MDF
1/4" thick, 22"x12" MDF (need two of these)
1/8" thick, 12"x16" MDF
1/8" thick, 4" x10" red acrylic
1/8" thick, 4" x10" blue acrylic
Total material = 628 in^2 1/4"MDF, 192 in^2 1/8" MDF, 80 in^2 1/8" acrylic = 900 in^2
Total cost = $6.14
- Game pieces
2 dice
4 10"x10" field boards that can be connected to each other with press fit.
20 people pieces (10 for each player, red vs blue)
> 1 princess
> 1 general (looks like a soldier)
> 8 soldiers
2 cannons
? walls, same number for each player
Total Number of pieces: 28 + # of walls
4/13/10
- Joe designed the field boards.
- Ellen redesigned the plunger for the cannon and sent the new files to Andy
- Al worked on the people pieces.
- There is no blue acrylic in stock, so change second color to _______.
- Ellen ordered springs for the cannon and ordered another 22"x12" 1/4" MDF and 4"x10" white acrylic
Part Number: 9662K22
Price: $3.53
quantity: 1 pack
description:
Type = Continuous-Length Compression Springs
Material = Spring-Tempered Steel
Outside Diameter = 0.5"
Wire Size = .048"
Overall Length = 36"
Coils Per Inch = 6
Constant = 82.8 lb/in
- Materials arrive. Ellen lasercut the MDF base for the cannons. The cannons are almost finished. They only need their plungers and springs.
04/15/10
- Joe lasercut one of the four game board plates (grid and peg holes).

04/20/10
- Ellen presented Cannon bases to Joe and Al. They approved.
- Albert and Joe laser cut soldier and princess pieces (Team colors are now red and black).

- Joe laser cut the remaining three game board plates and made the fortifications.

- Ellen laser cut dice

- Things left to do: wait for plunger from Andy and spring-> finish canon -> test cannon -> test gameplay
4/23-24/10
- Andy's plungers did not fit the specifications so Ellen went into shop and made the plungers.
- Joe spray painted the field boards, the walls, and the cannon bases
- got the spring and cut 2 pieces for the cannon. springs are 8 revolutions long
4/25/10
- Team met to put together all the pieces
- played three games against each other to test out game
- Al and Joe will finalize the rules and name of game was changed to "War of the Roses"
