MEAM.Design - MEAM 101 - T09

This year MEAM 101 will be hosting the first ever SolidWorks Toy Parade and you have been hired to design one of the floats. Your job is to brainstorm and create a dazzling float that even Mr. Macy would love. You have been supplied with several pieces to help you get started but, alas, there is (as always) a catch: it better move. You will be provided with only one motor that must both drive the wheels and confer repeating lateral motion to (at least) one visual element on your float. Calm down, it will be alright, you only have to create a CAD model, not physically build it. However, your model should be physically realizable.

Supplies

  • CAD file of a chassis, wheels, and motor (which you can modify)
  • Physical model of the chassis, wheels, and motor to fiddle around with
  • Your vast knowledge of the wonderful workings of SoildWorks
  • And, as always, your reliable friend Google (look to the Macy’s Day parade, the Parade of Roses, etc. for inspiration)

Things to consider:

  • Is my float manufacturable? Can the piece you used be made?
  • Are the fasteners you used standard or are you going to custom making each screw (no, you are not)?
  • Do the mechanical aspects of my float make sense?
  • Does my float follow the laws of Physics?

Fun float ideas!!

  • Santa giving a hug
  • Statue of Liberty waving
  • Jack jumping out of the Box
  • The monkey with the cymbals
  • Pumping pistons
