IdealsAndThePledgeOfAllegiance

Social Studies Essay - by Miranda Sol Ribeiro Vecino

The dictionary definition of ideal is:"A perfect type: what one would wish to be". But in my opinion an ideal is a belief so important it guides a persons' actions. For example, my dad believes in justice. So if my brother and I were misbehaving, he would send both of us up to our rooms because it would be the just thing to do. Three of the basic ideals that unite most Americans are:

  • Freedom of Religion
  • Freedom of Speech
  • Freedom to live and work where we choose

I do believe in these ideals. Because without Freedom of Speech, if I were accused of a crime, I would not have the freedom to go to court and have a lawyer defend me. Also you could get punished for speaking your mind. I want to be a Animal Vet and would like to live in New York when I grow up, but without the freedom to live and work where we choose, I would not get to choose what to be or where to live when I grow up. I am happy about Freedom of Religion, despite the fact that I do not have one, though I still respect other people's beliefs. I agree that it would be cruel to tell somebody: 'You have to be Jewish" or "you have to be Christian", while they have practiced and believed a different religion their whole lives.

The Pledge of Allegiance unites Americans because it states the important ideals most americans share and because a lot of school children recite it everyday. I feel that the pledge is a good way to show loyalty and devotion (allegiance) to the flag and our country. I think the Pledge of Allegiance reminds us about the few ways we are all equal. Because there are so much more ways we are different, than the few ways we are equal. That at the end of the day it doesn't matter who you are, what you are, just that we all believe in liberty and justice for all. Because we are an indivisible country. All, in all. I have to say, "I pledge allegiance to the flag, of the United States of America".
