Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering with Penn FLL is a great way to support students and promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics in your community.

We are looking for volunteers from around the greater Philadelphia area to serve as judges, referees and key volunteers at our Championship Event. No prior experience or technical knowledge is required. We provide training for all judges and volunteers.

Volunteer Roles:

Judges:
Judges serve an extremely important role in the FLL competition. This role involves spending the day listening to teams present information about their project, robot or use of core values and asking students questions to determine how well they grasped FLL related concepts. After viewing teams, they will meet back with the other judges and deliberate to determine which teams are eligible for awards.

Judges are required to attend a training session or call before the event and must stay for the entire competition.

Team Host:
Spend the day with a team. Help them navigate the Championship facilities, cheer them on during robot matches and provide motivation before judging sessions.

Timekeeper:
This person is someone comfortable keeping the flow of the day going by constantly checking the clock and communicating the timing to appropriate individuals.

Robot Design Admin:
This volunteer helps to maintain the schedule in the Robot Design Judging sessions.

Core Values Admin:
This volunteer helps to maintain the schedule in the Core Values Judging sessions.

Referee:
Observes team robot game matches, identifies rule violations, assesses field for scoring of matches, and participates in deliberations regarding contested calls and official scores.

Robot Compliance:
Checks robots for compliance with FLL rules prior to competition.

Team Queuing:
Team Queuing Volunteers are responsible for managing team traffic to and from the playing field. Team Queuers will stage and position teams in preparation for the start of matches.

Pit Admin:
Provides and distributes support to teams and quests as needed.

Pit Runner:
Responsible for keeping track of teams location and schedule.

Team Activity Coordinator:
Assist with setup and breakdown of team activity space, oversees activity area, and assists with an organized rotation of teams in and out of each activity.

Team Registration:
Welcoming teams to the event as well as checking teams into the event.

Practice Table Assistant:
Maintains the practice tables and practice schedule throughout the event.

Merchandise Sales:
Facilitates the sale of merchandise.

Volunteer Registration:
Volunteer Registration manages all activities at the Volunteer Information and Registration Table, and provides direction, assistance, and information to event Volunteers.

Emcee:
Serves as the public voice of the event. Provides time for robot matches and announcements throughout the day while keeping the audience engaged.

Photographer:
Helps to capture the moment.

Score Keeper:
This person is someone who enters data from score sheets into an electronic scoring system.
