CIS 700 Books, Summer 2007

Required books (3)

  • Learning Ruby by Michael Fitzgerald
    • $23.09 at Amazon.
    • Short enough to read, and thorough enough to be useful.

  • Build Your Own Ruby on Rails Web Applications by Patrick Lenz
    • $26.37 at Amazon.
    • This book covers barely enough Ruby to get by, but it's a good tutorial for Rails.

  • Professional Ajax, 2nd Edition (Programmer to Programmer) by Nicholas C. Zakas, Jeremy McPeak, and Joe Fawcett

Recommended books

Ruby and Rails books:

  • Sams Teach Yourself Ruby in 21 Days by Mark Slagell
    • $26.39 at Amazon.
    • Sams books vary greatly in quality, but this is a good one.
  • Programming Ruby: The Pragmatic Programmers' Guide, Second Edition by Dave Thomas
    • $29.67 at Amazon.
    • If you really want to get into Ruby, this is the book to get. I think there's too much of it for our needs, though.
  • Agile Web Development with Rails by Dave Thomas, David Hansson, Leon Breedt, and Mike Clark
    • $26.37 at Amazon.
    • Similarly, this is the book for Rails; but it's more than we need for CIS 700.

Other Ajax books:

  • Sams Teach Yourself Ajax in 10 Minutes by Phil Ballard
    • $11.24 at Amazon.
    • A really nice 'starter' book, but no more than that. Chapters 15 and 16 are available for you in Blackboard.

  • Ajax Patterns and Best Practices by Christian Gross
    • $44.99 at Amazon.
    • An advanced book, with useful perceptions about patterns in general, trends in Ajax development, and various web server and client techniques for achieving RESTful URL's.
      • Prerequisite knowledge should include familiarily with interfaces in object-oriented languages such as Java, basic software design patterns for object oriented languages, knowledge of the HTTP and HTML standards, and a rudimentary understanding of ow to make asynchronous (Ajax) calls in Javascript using a browser's XmlHttpRequest object.
    • The book's page at Apress has source code and other useful information.

Second Life books:

  • A Beginner's Guide to Second Life by v3image
    • $24.99 at Amazon.
    • Almost certainly the best book for beginners.
  • Second Life: The Official Guide by Michael Rymaszewski, Wagner James Au, Mark Wallace, Catherine Winters, Cory Ondrejka, Benjamin Batstone-Cunningham
    • $23.09 at Amazon.
    • The most complete book available. Has a small amount about the programming API.
